VRX Conference San Francisco

The VRX Conference in San Francisco on December 7 & 8, 2016 reminded me that while we are living in the future much of the time, the reality is that we are still going to have to cross a massive tech chasm before the mainstream will begin to adopt VR/AR solutions in their everyday lives. The strength of the San Francisco Bay Area's gaming community was brought fully to my attention as I watched countless gaming industry veterans talk about their lives moving from the early days of the internet to gaming, and now to VR and the next "platform" shift. They, like me, likened this period to the time when they were "working in their garages", back in the day, and I wasn't the only one to sense a lot of love and passion for today's technology and creativity. Hopefully the "trough of disillusionment" which may occur for many start-ups if big wins don't come along in 2017, 2018, or even 2019, will be averted long enough that folks can realize their dreams. Even the senior acquisitions manager for HTC said she'd seen 1, maybe 2 demos that really blew her mind. The bar is high people! On the tech front, 360° lenses are being manufactured to be put into a range of devices and smartphones, including the one that I'm holding in my fingers below. Luckily I got to meet with my colleagues from the VR/AR Association Vancouver Chapter, and also a few more industry pals that I've made along the way. I also got to experience a range of haptics demos, which bring a whole new dimension to the AR/VR sensation.
Off-Planet VR Meet-up 1st Anniversary

Yay it was the 1-year Anniversary for Off-Planet and the East Bay's biggest VR meet-up! Kevin Kunze of Kunze Productions demo'd his new Mavic drone, and we heard from the local talent about what they're working on, including VR at Berkeley, the Berkeley VR Club. I got to demo Google Earth in VR for the first time on the VIVE. Also making my day was getting a first-look at Siciliana Trevino's Kickstarter Project (which we backed); her VR music video for SnowAngel. It turned out great, and I'm so proud of this accomplishment.
CyArk Interactive Education Symposium

The CyArk Interactive Education Symposium was a two-day event, kicking off with a film screening on November 30th at Stanford. They followed with a half-day EdTech conference with CyArk's technology, and the innovations from others in field as the focal point. Chris Chin from HTC, Shauna Heller from Clay Park VR (moderator), and Phil Kim from KIPP Schools, and Paul Turnbull of the Mid-Pacific Institute joined a panel discussing the role of VR in education and how it is being used to not only teach the next generation about places and things they wouldn't otherwise experience, but also its role in a new education paradigm. In attendance were others from CyArk, National Geographic Learning, West Point Academy, and more. While lacking in quantity, the symposium made up for this in super high quality participants and engagement.
World Memorials in VR (Memoreality Project)

While in Berlin for AWE Europe, I spent some time shooting at the Lewetzowstrasse Memorial in Alt-Moabit. This became a project that I will continue to work on as much as possible in the coming year, hoping to add new memorials that are shot in VR and are accompanied by an activity and discussion materials. Augmented World Expo Europe

Hopscotch Interactive attended the Augmented World Expo Europe in Berlin, Germany in October, which was a completely different experience from the same show that had just taken place in Asia three weeks prior. From Bosch's Reflekt, to ViewAR's platform, it is clear that the industrial applications for VR are showing strongly amongst the Europeans. It's no surprise that with strong automotive and industrial sectors, and so much mechanical innovation in Germany, that AR in particular will see early adoption and a striking number of big-investment applications (such as BMW motorcycles or AUDI cars). It was an amazing juxtaposition from the VR/AR enthusiast market in China, and Hopscotch Interactive was certainly successful scouting out top tech solutions for marketing.

Augmented World Expo Asia held from 9/24-9/25 in Xi'an, China did not disappoint. From the venue and the organization by iGinwa and the AWE staff to the excellent speakers and exhibitors, the entire experience was amazing. There were countless highlights to the trip, but an outstanding one was demoing the numerous AR wearable devices (smart glasses), and getting to see what products are on their way for 2017. The body of research that was presented by leading VR/AR researchers was also staggering - and AR/VR uses for entertainment was definitely overshadowed by the real-world applications of VR/AR such as visualizing cancer tumors and other medical applications. Hopscotch Interactive presented to an enthusiastic audience about Real Estate VR and the future of real estate marketing. Fortunately for the speakers, AWE and iGinwa planned an all-day excursion to one of the world's greatest cultural treasures - the 38 square mile burial grounds of the Qin Dynasty's first Emperor Qin Shi Huang, home to the Emperor's Terracotta Warriors.

Hopscotch Interactive founder Emily Olman spoke to a full house at the Off Planet VR 2 event on 2/25. The event reached capacity, and so it was a huge success for the Off Planet organizer, filmmaker Siciliana Trevino of www.quirkeley.com.
